Opened in 1850, Overleigh Cemetery hosts many fascinating graves which reflect Chester’s rich and diverse history.
You’ll discover the extraordinary stories of around 25 of those laid to rest here, including Mary Jonas, mother of 15 sets of twins, Edward Langtry, husband of Edward VII’s mistress who went mad and died in the Chester lunatic asylum, Ishizo Ishimura, a Japanese acrobat who broke his neck performing a backwards double somersault, and William Cross who made his own coffin from thousands of matchboxes, illuminated inside by lights from a battery
