The Town Hall is the most important Gothic Revival building in Chester. Designed by William Henry Lynn and built in 1865-9, it is a High Victorian reinterpretation of the 13th century Cloth Hall at Ypres in Belgium, the most impressive commercial building of medieval northern Europe.
Its interior is enriched with sculptures chronicling Chester’s relationship with the Crown, a wealth of civic portraits, silver, stained glass and wood panelling, and the names of every Mayor and Lord Mayor of Chester since 1238.
